MediaTek, Murata and the leading OTA provider Carota jointly launch a NB-IoT solution

Tripartite press release: MediaTek, Murata and Carota have announced today June 30th, 2021, the release of an OTA enabled NB-IoT solution.

Carota’s one-stop FOTA (Firmware over-the-air) solution facilitates the update of the firmware’s versions and quickly fixes any potential security vulnerabilities for the released chips. Carota’s differential algorithms empowers the performing MT2625 chipset to successfully enter the Japanese, European and North American markets and is certificated by major mobile operators in their respective countries.

NB-IoT is primarily used for applications of low-power consumption, small data, and low-cost services. These features are suitable for numerous IoT needs and applications including smart water, smart grid, gas meters, smart homes, environmental intelligence, e-parking applications, etc. To take the e-parking as an example, the parking lot doesn’t require any manpower to manually record the parking in/out time, and a geomagnetic module installed in the parking space automatically records the parking time and transmits the information to the server and platform. The vehicle owner is automatically billed and can pay the parking fees directly after login to his/her mobile app.

Equipped with Carota FOTA upgrade, MediaTek chip provides IoT devices manufacturers with safe and reliable one-click remote update, upgrade, repair, and data management services; enabling Murata 1SS module to efficiently update the software/firmware versions, to manage the security of the IoT devices and to deploy new features while bringing in visible benefits on the maintenance cost reductions. We foresee that such alliances will not only be realized in the Japanese market, but also expand in the near future to other international markets.

The General Manager Winson Hsu of MediaTek said that “our excellent NB-IoT chip has been validated in the European and North American markets, and FOTA is considered a Must-Have feature for our high performing NB-IoT chips. Carota is MediaTek’s selected key FOTA partner for the MT2625 chipset, in light of Carota’s extensive experiences in overseas markets and first-class FOTA differential algorithm verified by customers. MediaTek has worked closely with strategic partners, Murata and Carota, to roll out its NB-IoT chip. The MT2625 chipset is expected to open up the huge market potential of the NB-IoT and to support customers adopting the chip to develop end-products which better than ever meet the changing market needs.”

The General Manager of Murata Manufacturing, Hiro Hyogo, stated that “the narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) cellular modem module "1SS module" developed by Murata has a size of only 13.2 mm x 10.6 mm x 1.8 mm, which is among the smallest modules in the world. The small size and low power consumption (3.5uA in PSM mode) are ideal for use IoT devices (such as wearable devices or tracking devices), which can achieve up to ten years of battery life.”

The 1SS module also provides an OpenCPU solution. It supports the module as the main processor and directly uses the rich hardware interface resources inside the module, which can simplify users ‘development difficulty and process, streamline the hardware and structural design, so as to meet the customers’ requirements for size, cost, power consumption, and safety. Combined with eSIM technology, it is more suitable for a new generation of ultra-small size and ultra-low power consumption IoT terminal equipment.

1SS module adopts MediaTek MT2625 chip, which is mainly used in smart water and gas meters, household appliances, vending machines, etc. in Japan;

This time, we cooperate with MediaTek and Carota to use each other's strengths and join forces to serve a wide range of IoT application scenarios and explore the infinite market potential of IoT worldwide.”

Carota’s founder CEO, Mr. Paul Wu, said: “We are proud of being part of the ‘A team’. Carota’s strengths lies in its differential technology, allowing to update only the difference between the existing and new file. The size of the data transmission can be shrinked by up to 95%, significantly reducing the download time. In 2019, the IoT lean management platform, Limi OS, was launched, which integrates IoT device management and data center technology. Limi OS operates in accordance with the industry characteristics, and helps enterprises reduce their costs, improve their efficiency, and discover new business models.”
